A Place of Ideas

Thoughts on Microtonal Music

In music, I like the idea of going beyond the traditional 12 notes per octave. But not much beyond. A chain of sixteen notes pulled from the meantone circle of fifths usually suffices.

Here's a comparison: Twelve-tone equal temperament versus a sixteen-note meantone scale.

C C♯/D♭ D D♯/E♭ E F F♯ G G♯/A♭ A A♯/B♭ B C C C♯ D♭ D D♯ E♭ E F F♯ G G♯ A♭ A A♯ B♭ B C

As you can see, we just split the sharps and flats into separate notes.

In this system, I prefer traditional harmony, but making occasional use of the fact that the interval from C to A♯ is a nice consonance, particularly when placed on top of a major chord as C-E-G-A♯.

F A C D♯ G B D G C E F D♯ D B A♯ C
